By: Heather Mitchell In my early twenties I decided to try making a baguette using a recipe I'd found in one of my grandmother's old cookbooks. It didn't seem tough, even though I'd never used yeast before and didn't have a mixer...how hard could it be? Turns out it was hard, as a rock that is. I could've used that baguette as a baseball bat. I didn't think about baking bread again for over 10 years. Shortly after getting married I decided to try it again and my year on maternity leave gave me the opportunity to try repeatedly.
Feeling a bit trepidatious, I scoured Google and YouTube for recipes. I started with what looked like the easiest possible recipe - no knead bread. I moved on to soda bread, sandwich bread and pita.
Everything was doable without an electric mixer and nothing was particularly difficult, although I admit I have yet to try a baguette again.
